Cisco HyperFlex HX Data Platform
End of sale. End-of-life announced 2023-09-12. Hardware end of sale 2024-03-12; HXDP software end of sale 2024-09-11; end of software maintenance 2025-09-11 (no further fixes); last date of support 2029-02-28. Successor: Cisco Compute Hyperconverged with Nutanix.
HyperFlex combined Cisco HX-Series UCS nodes, Fabric Interconnects and the HX Data Platform (a controller VM per node, from the Springpath acquisition) under VMware ESXi, managed through HX Connect, vCenter and Cisco Intersight. It was sold per node as Edge, Datacenter Advantage and Datacenter Premier subscriptions. Cisco ended sales in 2024 and software maintenance in September 2025; existing customers get best-effort TAC support without patches until 28 February 2029 and are directed to Cisco Compute Hyperconverged with Nutanix. It should not be chosen for new deployments.

Strengths
- Always-on inline deduplication and compression with zero-copy snapshots and clones.
- Tight integration with Cisco UCS, Fabric Interconnects and Intersight fleet management.
- Scales to 96 nodes per cluster with compute-only nodes.
- Clear Cisco migration path: HX M6 nodes can be re-imaged for Nutanix on UCS.
- Standard vSphere VMs make exiting technically straightforward.
Considerations
- End of sale (2024) and end of software maintenance (2025-09-11): no patches, including security fixes.
- Last date of support is 2029-02-28; renewals are limited to 12-month terms.
- ESXi only - requires separate Broadcom VMware subscriptions; Hyper-V support ended June 2025.
- No erasure coding, storage QoS, file or object services, or native microsegmentation.
- Hardware locked to Cisco HX nodes; M5 nodes cannot be converted to Nutanix.
- Not suitable for any new deployment - choose the successor or another platform.
Use-case fit
Capable vSphere HCI in its day, but end of sale and no software fixes since September 2025 rule it out for new use.
HyperFlex runs only on VMware ESXi, so it offers no route away from Broadcom licensing.
Had validated Citrix/Horizon designs, but cannot be bought and receives no fixes.
HX Edge suited branches, but no new nodes are sold and support ends in 2029.
All-NVMe and RF3 worked for databases, but no QoS, no new fixes and a hard end date.
No native self-service, SDN or microsegmentation, and the product is end of life.
Only a CSI driver; no Kubernetes platform, and no future development.
No current GPU hardware or AI stack can be ordered.
Native replication and stretched clusters exist for installed estates, but no runbooks or cloud DR.
No public-cloud version; Intersight is management only.
Not purchasable, and VMware plus HX renewals make it costly to keep.
No security patches after September 2025 is unacceptable for regulated environments.
No free edition and no new licences can be purchased.
