HPE SimpliVity
HPE SimpliVity is a turnkey hyperconverged appliance on HPE ProLiant DL380/DL325 servers, with a controller VM per node providing always-on inline deduplication, compression and VM-centric backup and replication. Since SimpliVity 6.x/7.0 it runs either Broadcom VMware vSphere (licensed separately by the customer) or the HPE Morpheus VM Essentials HVM (KVM) hypervisor, which is embedded in the SimpliVity term licence. It suits edge, ROBO and general-purpose VM estates of up to 16 nodes per cluster, is sold per node as a socket-based 1/3/5-year term licence with mandatory HPE support and installation, and can be managed from GreenLake through HPE Private Cloud PC3000.

Strengths
- Always-on inline dedupe and compression plus built-in VM backup and replication in every licence.
- Two-node HA with a lightweight Arbiter and up to 48 two-node clusters per federation for ROBO.
- Choice of VMware or HPE VM Essentials (KVM) on the same appliances, with VM Essentials included in the licence.
- Single HPE support contract for hardware, SimpliVity and VM Essentials.
- Integrations with HPE StoreOnce (immutability, cloud copies), InfoSight and GreenLake PC3000.
Considerations
- HPE hardware only; licences are not portable.
- Clusters top out at 16 nodes and 96 per federation; no erasure coding, NVMe tier, file or object services.
- Installation service and 3-5 year support are mandatory; pricing is quote-only.
- A federation cannot mix VMware and VM Essentials clusters; RapidDR is VMware-only and extra cost.
- Staying on vSphere means buying Broadcom VMware licences separately.
Use-case fit
Solid for general VM estates up to 16 nodes per cluster with dedupe and backup built in, but no erasure coding or NVMe tier.
Existing SimpliVity customers can move from ESXi to VM Essentials on the same appliances, but hardware stays HPE-only.
Dedupe and instant clones suit desktops and HPE targets VDI, though GPU choice and scale are limited.
1U nodes, 2-node HA with a remote Arbiter and deduplicated remote backup are made for ROBO.
SAS/SATA flash, no QoS and one controller VM per node make it a weak fit for latency-critical tier-1 databases.
Self-service comes only by adding PC3000 or Morpheus Enterprise.
Only a CSI plug-in; no bundled Kubernetes.
A few GPU options and no AI stack.
Native backup, 10-minute remote RPO, stretched clusters and RapidDR cover most DR needs; RapidDR is VMware-only and extra.
GreenLake management and cloud backup copies, but no SimpliVity in public cloud.
Simple to run with one vendor, but mandatory services and multi-year support raise entry cost.
Runs disconnected with Secure Boot and on-prem data, but few published certifications.
Fast clones help, but there is no free edition and entry cost is high.
Every comparison point
| Architecture & platform | |
|---|---|
| Hypervisor(s)Which hypervisor runs the virtual machines, and whether a choice of hypervisor is supported. |
