Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure

Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) runs AOS distributed storage in a Controller VM on every node, with the included AHV hypervisor (ESXi also supported) and Prism Central for multi-cluster management. It is sold per physical core as Starter, Pro and Ultimate term subscriptions, with NCM, Unified Storage, NKP and NDB as add-ons. It suits enterprises of any size, and is the most common landing zone for VMware exits; hardware comes from Nutanix NX, Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Cisco, Fsas Tech (Fujitsu) and Supermicro, and external arrays (Dell PowerFlex/PowerStore, Everpure/Pure FlashArray) can now be used for storage.

Strengths

  • Mature, simple HCI with one-click full-stack upgrades (LCM) across many hardware brands.
  • AHV hypervisor included; ESXi also supported, easing VMware transitions.
  • Complete DR stack: NearSync, sync replication, Metro Availability and recovery plans.
  • Same platform on-premises and in AWS/Azure (NC2) with portable licences.
  • Broad add-on portfolio: files/objects (NUS), databases (NDB), Kubernetes (NKP), AI.
  • Strong security posture: STIG hardening with SCMA, FIPS 140-3 and Common Criteria.

Considerations

  • No public price list; per-core term subscriptions and add-ons need careful negotiation.
  • All cores in a cluster must be licensed; NCI Starter is capped at 12 nodes and cannot run on NC2.
  • Key features (Metro, sync DR, microsegmentation, NCM automation) require Ultimate or add-ons.
  • CVM on every node consumes CPU and RAM (typically ~8 vCPU and 32 GB or more).
  • No full native backup; plan for a partner backup product.
  • AHV and Prism are proprietary; leaving means another migration.

Use-case fit

Server virtualisation & consolidation

Mature, simple HCI with strong data services, LCM and live migration on a wide choice of hardware.

VMware exit / Broadcom alternative

Free Move tool, zero-copy vVols conversion, ESXi-to-AHV path on the same hardware, and external-array support ease the move off vSphere.

VDI & end-user computing

Long VDI track record with Citrix, Omnissa and AVD, per-user NCI-VDI licensing, vGPU and Nutanix Files for profiles.

ROBO & edge sites

One- and two-node clusters, per-VM NCI-Edge licences and fleet management from Prism Central.

Business-critical databases & tier-1 apps

All-NVMe, RF3, metro/sync replication and NDB for database lifecycle make it strong for tier-1.

Private cloud & self-service IaaS

Flow VPCs, microsegmentation, projects and NCM self-service with v4 APIs and Terraform.

Kubernetes & modern applications

NKP and CSI for Volumes/Files are capable, but NKP is a separate licence and less common than OpenShift or Tanzu.

AI, ML & GPU workloads

vGPU/passthrough and Nutanix Enterprise AI are available; the full-stack Agentic AI solution is still reaching GA.

Disaster recovery & secondary site

Async, NearSync and sync replication, Metro, runbook recovery plans and cloud DR to NC2 in one stack.

Hybrid cloud

NC2 runs the identical stack in AWS and Azure with portable licences and one Prism Central.

SMB & lean IT teams

Easy to run with one-click upgrades, but core-based subscriptions and add-ons make it pricey for very small sites.

Regulated, sovereign & air-gapped

FIPS 140-3, Common Criteria, DoDIN APL, STIG hardening with SCMA and full dark-site operation.

Test, development & labs

Instant clones and free Community Edition for labs, but production-grade test clusters need paid licences.

Architecture modelSoftware-defined (bring your own certified hardware), turnkey appliance, or disaggregated HCI (dHCI).

Software-defined HCI: buy the licence and run it on Nutanix NX, OEM appliances (Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Cisco, Fsas Tech) or qualified servers. Since NCI 7.1 compute-only clusters can also use external arrays (Dell PowerFlex/PowerStore, Everpure FlashArray).

Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) ↗
Storage engineHow the distributed storage is implemented - controller VM, in-kernel, or a separate storage layer.

AOS Distributed Storage Fabric runs in a Controller VM (CVM) on each node, with data locality, replication factor or erasure coding across nodes, and a Prism Element instance per cluster.

Nutanix Support & Insights - Documentation ↗
Minimum nodes per clusterThe smallest supported production cluster.

Three nodes for a standard cluster; one-node and two-node clusters are supported for ROBO/edge (two-node needs a witness).

Nutanix Configuration Maximums ↗
Maximum nodes per clusterThe largest supported cluster, and how further scale is achieved.

NCI Starter is capped at 12 nodes per cluster; Pro and Ultimate have no licence cap. AHV clusters are tested to 32 nodes; scale beyond that with more clusters under Prism Central.

Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) datasheet ↗
Single-node deploymentWhether a one-node cluster is supported, and with what limits.

Supported for ROBO/edge (CVM needs 6 vCPU / 20 GB minimum); data is protected across disks only and there is no node-level HA, so replicate to another site.

portal.nutanix.com ↗
Two-node cluster & witnessTwo-node support and what it needs as a witness or tie-breaker.
