Proxmox Virtual Environment

Proxmox VE is a Debian-based, AGPLv3 virtualization platform that combines KVM, LXC containers, Ceph and ZFS storage, SDN and HA in one multi-master cluster with no separate management server. Ceph RBD/CephFS runs directly on the cluster nodes for HCI. All features are free; optional per-socket subscriptions add the Enterprise repository and support. Proxmox Backup Server and Proxmox Datacenter Manager complete the stack.

Strengths

  • All features in every tier, including the free no-subscription edition.
  • Published, low per-socket prices from EUR 120 to EUR 1,100 per year.
  • Integrated Ceph, ZFS, SDN, firewall and HA with no separate management server.
  • Proxmox Backup Server gives incremental, deduplicated, encrypted backups.
  • ESXi import wizard and native Veeam support ease VMware migrations.
  • Open source with standard formats - low lock-in.

Considerations

  • 24/7 support is new: Premium from 2026-10-19, Standard by end of 2026; Basic is next business day.
  • Ceph design and day-2 operations need skills; no deduplication for VM storage.
  • No DR orchestration, cloud DR or DBaaS; synchronous replication only via stretch cluster.
  • No hardware certification list or single-vendor hardware support.
  • Full-stack lifecycle is node-by-node package updates, without firmware management.
  • No FIPS, Common Criteria or STIG attestations.
