What it is good at
Continuous replication with test failover into an isolated Azure vNet - you can rehearse cutover as often as you like before committing.
Where it falls down
The classic VMware/physical-to-Azure path is being folded into Azure Migrate. Check the current supported-scenario matrix before designing around it.
Capabilities
- Changed-block tracking / incremental sync
- Wave / batch orchestration
- Non-disruptive test migration
- Rollback / failback after cutover
- Network and IP mapping
- Encryption in flight
- API / CLI automation
Cost and licensing
- Cost category
- Paid — Commercial licence required.
- Indicative price
- First 31 days free per instance, then roughly US$16-25 per protected instance per month
- Licence model
- Consumption-based Azure meter per protected instance per month, plus storage, snapshots and egress. Azure-to-Azure and on-prem-to-Azure are metered separately.
- How to license it
- No purchase order - it bills straight to your Azure subscription. Use a Recovery Services vault. The 31-day free period per new instance covers most migration cutovers at zero replication cost.
